TL DR: The Quake series is only marketable as a multiplayer game. The one thing that all the Quake games have in common is a strong multiplayer component, therefore, Quake is only marketable as a multiplayer game. Q4 was their attempt to take on the Halo series. The third quake was really more of a Tech-Demo with focus on Multiplayer. The second one had more of a focus on gameplay and story mechanincs. if there was a single-player Quake 5 who would they market that game to? The first Quake was a hodgepodge of ideas, with a focus on the 3D tech they had just made. It's the fans of the classic quake games, Quake 3 and hero oriented shooters. Even Quake Champions has a marketable audience. The people who like to play games with over the top themes. What about Rage? Well it seems that they decided to go the route of Marketing it to the same people who would play games like Borderlands, or Saint's Row. They sell Doom to the classic Doom fans, and edgelords who just want to play an over the top, violent game. After some pondering about it, I have come to the conclusion on why there'll never be a Quake 5.
